I’m a big fan of both textured accents and living plants in a space. I moved an indoor tree away from my ladder shelves in my studio, so to fill that corner I wanted large tiered planters. Instead of buying them, I decided to make my own, propping up woven baskets on wood table legs, securing them with screws to a wood disc inside. I came up with this idea in the table leg aisle of Lowes (just like this table leg DIY project) and noticed in that aisle they also sold round wood circles too. I thought first of just cutting the table legs and securing them to the circles as a basic wood stand (also an option) but instead hid the wood circle inside the basket. These woven basket plant stands are easy to make, supplies and steps listed below. First, gather your supplies: I used two baskets from World Market (a small harper macrame basket and a small dakota basket), four 27.5” tapered legs from Lowes, two 12” birch circles from Lowes, 1¾” wood screws, drill with drill bits, miter saw, clamp, cotton cord (optional), and gold spray paint. I added a few stripes of cotton cord to the plain basket to complement the macramé string on the other basket – totally optional step. Remove the four double sided screws that are attached to the table legs when you purchase them. Mark 16” from the bottom on each table leg, this will create two different legs at different lengths for the plant stands from one 27.5” table leg. To create the mid mod leg look of angled supporting legs, cut the 27.5” tapered wood legs at 85 degrees (10 degrees off the 90 degree angle). The first cut creates two legs in different sizes, one 16” and the other 11.5”. The bottom smaller leg has a moveable metal foot that will sit flush with the floor even thought the top part of that smaller leg is cut at 85 degrees. The taller leg needs to be cut again at the the very bottom at the same 85 degree angle (same angle top and bottom). Use the miter saw to shave the bottom of the taller leg so the 85 degree angle at the top of that leg matches the 85 degree angle at the bottom. With the 12” wood circle, make a cross shape and drill pilot holes 3/4” from the edge. A clamp holding the wood circle to a flat stable surface makes this step quick and easy. Drill vertical straight pilot holes (not at the same angle as the leg) for attaching the legs to the disc through the basket. Layer the wood circle on the bottom of the basket. Attach the legs to the wood circle with 1 ¾” wood screws. Once secured to the wood disc, the plant stands legs may tilt slightly one way or the other. Spin and correct them so that all four sit flat on the floor. I left the wood legs in their natural state, but you can stain or paint them any color you like. Black stained legs paired with a black & white or black & natural basket would be a very good look too! As a final step, I spray painted the metal feet with Krylon Gold Leaf spray paint. These plant stands are great way to add both plant babies and more texture to your space! I spent a few hours hiking in Muir Woods on Friday, that was such a cool experience. There’s something about walking dirt paths and being surrounded by 1,000+ year old redwood trees that feels grounding and makes the little things we worry about seem…so little. I recommend the visit if you’re ever in the Bay Area, it’s about 30 minutes north from the Golden Gate Bridge. I bought a few more green plants for my studio (can’t stop, won’t stop) so I needed two new planters and decided to make them. Assuming all goes well with that DIY project, then I’ll share them later this week! Favorite links from the week: This urban San Francisco apartment has a relaxed, neutral textures and textiles. Weekend Reading 6.12.21 published first on https://fanseeaus.blogspot.com/ via Tumblr Weekend Reading 6.12.21 I was looking at the extra closet in my old home office, the one that’s filled with boxes of pictures and photo albums. If I digitize the photos and store the photo albums elsewhere, I could transform the closet into a beverage center or study spot which makes more sense since the space is used by my teenagers. Of course one turns to the internet for research and to my delight I found more than just images of offices and wet bars, I came across clever mud rooms and reading nooks too. May I present the four uses I uncovered for closets, one’s that might serve a greater purpose for you beyond just storage. Note some of the images show niches but the design elements would work tucked into closets too. 1. Wet Bar/Beverage Centers via domino 2. Mud Rooms

Hopefully it’ll be done next month and we can write one big breakdown with approximately 473 photos. But back to how plants can not only hide ugly stuff, they can also offer some pretty great privacy, as we’re about to demonstrate below. One of the things that contributes to our house being extra walkable to shops, parks, the beach, and restaurants is that it’s less like a sprawling suburban neighborhood due to the lots being a good deal smaller (you can read more about why a walkable neighborhood and a smaller house/lot really appealed to our family in this post). It’s a similar feeling to our former beach house in Cape Charles, Virginia, which taught us that we really didn’t mind being that close to other homes. One thing is for sure, it was nice to circulate among groups of people this weekend, it’s been so long! June is always a lazy month and my teens sleep in late, which makes the mornings really quiet. It all sounds like great fun to me! For those who’ve been to Spain, did you enjoy the southern towns or the northern cities of Bilbao and San Sebastian? I’m torn!
via Tumblr Weekend Reading 6.6.21 I made a bold move and booked a flight to Spain in September. It will be my first international trip in two years since I traveled to Peru and I am doing a happy dance knowing I get to hop on a plane in just a few months and visit a foreign country. I’m traveling with two besties, the same girlfriends I traveled with to Peru, and we are zig zagging our way through Spain: from Barcelona –> Valencia–> Madrid –> Zaragoza –> San Sebastian–> Bilbao. My go to suitcase is this Samsonite Carry On Spinner, its dimensions work for both domestic carry-on and also international checked bags if I keep it in the weight limits. When I travel domestically, I squeeze most everything into my carry on spinner and bring it with a backpack on the plane. International travel requires a more thought out strategy because size and weight limits are different. With international travel I check a bag (the Samsonite spinner I mentioned) and carry on a larger tote that fits under my seat, one for toiletries, tech, and a change of clothes. I went shopping for a bag that would fit international carry on regulations and rounded up some great options. Some of these have a trolley sleeve so they can sit on top of your rolling luggage, making transport through a terminal or to your accommodations much easier. International carriers have different dimension limits for hand baggage (carry on). This little chart is as of June 2021 shows restrictions for a few major international airlines. It was her informal way of serving us and easier than walking through the kitchen to the outdoor area, but I never forgot how cool it was that she did that. One of my favorite bars in the cute town of Calistoga has an open window bar where I love to sip a cocktail or glass of wine. Now that we’ve kicked off summer, it feels like it’s time to open all the windows and let the fresh air in, and while you’re at it, offer up a beverage and a snack! Sometimes referred to as a servery window, these pass through openings allow for indoor to outdoor entertaining. I realized this is the last summer before they are both driving themselves everywhere, working a job and hanging out with their friends and it made me want to slow waaayy down and enjoy the season. This week I went canoeing with my brother and nephews in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and thought to myself how pleasant life can be when you carve out time to purposefully slow down and live in the moment. I have plans to visit a local winery this upcoming week that is famous for its huge lavender fields. There’s a family get together with cousins on the Colorado River to attend in late June promising lazy days and laughter. I’m thinking I’ll visit Portland and drive the Oregon coast in July. By the time August rolls around, the focus will be returning to school and the flip house currently under renovation will (fingers crossed) be complete. Last summer was slow by force, and I’ve decided this summer will be slow by choice. I plan to spend the next two months living and working at a slower pace, writing and creating when I feel productive, but resting and relaxing when the mood strikes. Be sure to “favorite” the shop and you’ll get announcements on new artwork in your Etsy feed.
